The 100% Rule
The other day while doing more reading and writing I came across this connection between a bunch of different books. The concept I saw linking them together was what I now call the “100% Rule.”
This is a simple rule that is similar to the old saying, “What is worth doing, is worth doing right.” or as Miyamoto Musashi said, “The only reason to draw your sword is to cut the enemy down.”
To translate, when you start something… give it your all!
“If you are going to be faithful and dependable, you must give 100% of your effort 100% of the time in all that you do; 99.9% is not good enough.” James Merritt
I know what you are thinking, “That seems a little extreme!” I mean 99.9% basically is 100%, right? Here are some of Merritt’s examples of what 99.9% looks like.
• 22,000 checks will be deducted from the wrong bank accounts in the next 60 minutes
• 1314 phone calls will be misrouted every minute• 12 babies will be given to the wrong parent each day
• 2 plane landings daily at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago will be unsafe
• 291 pacemaker operations will be performed incorrectly this year
• 20,000 incorrect drug prescriptions will be written in the next 12 months
• 107 incorrect medical procedures will be end of the day
After looking at the above numbers we should all be able to agree that 99.9% isn’t good enough. Then again, “Good is the Enemy of Great.”
In order to be great, we have to follow the “100% Rule.” This takes us to a more present state of being and increases the rewards we will receive. The best way to start down this path is giving 100% in the little things you do everyday. This will help you practice and build up will power for the larger tasks, projects and challenges you wish to complete.
As Musashi would say, “Even in practice you must strike with all your heart and with all your soul. To do otherwise will result in your being unable to strike with full force and conviction should the need arise.”
Start strong in all that you do and you will finish stronger than you started!
