One of the small books I surf through every so often is “IF… (Questions for the Game of Life)” by Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell. This week’s “IF” brought a serious light to a subject. The question was,
“If you had to lose everyone you know in a tragic accident except one person, who would you choose to survive?”
This type of question spun me into some deep analysis. When I asked my oldest daughter, she paused for a few moments and responded, “NA!” When I asked my wife, she paused, looked at me, and said, “Well, you know…” to which I said, “Your dog?” She replied, “No, you silly.” When she asked me, I remembered a conversation I had shared with our daughters’ mother before they were born. I asked their mother if there was a complication, and they came to me with a similar question, who should I pick. Their mom responded selfishly; she would want me to pick her because we could always have more children or even adopt together. We agreed, but thankfully never had to cross that bridge.
When isolating this question at my age and in my world now, I found the best answer wasn’t “NA!;” nor was it my wife, kids, or dog. The question dove deeper for me. I would choose the person that could create a significant difference in our world by motivating others to change. So the question to you is that if we know each other, would it be you that I would pick? My choice isn’t by my doing, but rather by yours. The time to make some waves is now. Let the crash of our waives inspire others to lead by example and make the world a better place.
