How To Effectively Beat Yourself Up

Most recently, I have been building my training sessions through a series of previous progressions. These are multi-layered with combinations of Resistant Bands and Kettlebell Circuits, as well as Primal Workouts using my body weight. Stacking all three workouts into one session consistently challenges me mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Revisiting these is great on many levels. I have tracked my progress through a journal and data log that includes my time intervals, repetitions, and weight. I am always excited to get started, but typically after the first circuit, I realize I'm looking up at a taller mountain to climb than I remember. I reach this feeling of early defeat because my numbers are not where they used to be six months, a year, or even two years ago. Honestly, it's humiliating, and it makes me feel weak. At that moment, I grow the most by switching gears to a different mental perspective.

The first step is I focus on adopting the One More Mindset. I aim at accomplishing one exercise at a time before thinking of the following exercise or even how many intervals are left. This principle transitions into life well, allowing us to prioritize a task until it is complete. It also develops a sense of fundamental building blocks to a better habit of thinking by taking each situation or task one at a time. With this, I emphasize my efforts on beating my last round. Guess what happens? I do! This momentum fires me up and gives me hope. It puts wind in my sails and keeps me going. Inevitably as I continue, I get more than just one more repetition. I get eight or even ten more. Best of all, when I finish, I get close to my best number, and sometimes I even set a new Personal Record. This process continues every time I circle back to each training session. I know I might not see this format for another week, so I give it everything I have in my tank. Do I always make my previous numbers? Do I always set a new PR? Some days I can’t even get close, but I still die trying to reach that goal.

The beauty and benefit of tracking what you do are endless. It builds you up and beats you down only to help you recall how amazing you once were and how awesome you can become if you get after it. Numbers don’t lie because what gets tracked gets accomplished. Be brave and write it down. Save them and revisit them often so you can continue to chase your goals.
