Empowered, Prepared, Unstoppable: Inside the AGAG Women’s Combatives Camp 2025
It was an idea that started two years ago while I was at A Girl and A Gun’s (AGAG) National Conference. I promised all my students I would continue to make myself as available as possible to elevate their self-defense skills. During that year, I found that my schedule didn’t always line up with specific chapters; then one day, while washing my hair in the shower (no jokes, please :P), I had another lightening bolt of an idea strike me. What if we hosted a training camp right here at Martial Way Legacy in Austin, Texas? We have mats on the floor, striking pads, and a trained team ready to assist! All that was left was a phone call to one of my favorite human beings, Robyn Sandoval, to verify schedules. I don’t recall getting beyond about two sentences, and she wanted to team up.
Nearly a year later, we launched the first-ever AGAG Combatives Camp, driven by our primary goal to create a safe environment that meets attendees where they are and helps elevate their knowledge, skills, and practical application in hand-to-hand self-defense.
We planned out a three-day training schedule, hosting many topics we teach at their national conference and more. These topics included themes on mobility, flexibility, strength, and conditioning, as well as multiple scenario-based and variable-based training programs. Topics included Primal Mobility, Five Pillars Fitness, Weapon Disarms and Retention, Empty Hand Self-Defense, The One More Mindset, Ground Zero Escapes, Knife Defense, Flexible Weapons, and Improvised Weapons. Each day, we built upon themes of strategy for escaping and surviving scenarios, which we then tied together in simulations for review.
Every woman left empowered mentally, physically, and spiritually, knowing that they not only had the strategies and techniques for a real-world self-defense but also the mindset through this powerful, hands-on training event.
“This wasn’t a sit-and-watch kind of weekend,” said Loretta Paul from Colorado. “It was intense, empowering, and exactly what I needed to feel more capable in my daily life.”
After discussing it with all the women in attendance, we quickly decided whether or not to do this event again.
"I had learned so much and love your approach of adding layers after we get familiar with the basics. Your explanations of why you use certain techniques in certain situations is so helpful. I look forward to coming back next year!" Annie Dunkin
