The No-Excuses Formula to Finally Reach Your Goals

We kicked off the new year with our eyes locked on a stack of goals. The first was to tackle a virtual challenge GoRuck hosted, called Ruck Fit. It was the perfect challenge for anyone wanting to start rucking, get off the couch, or even prepare for bigger events as the year unfolds.

The challenge was simple. You ruck you. You pick your weight, direction, miles, days, and times. Then, clock in for ten rucks across the month of January and wear your patch with pride. For my wife and me, this was the perfect type of challenge to start stacking more miles toward larger challenges that were already on the calendar.

Most things are typically simple, and not always easy. The challenge was organizing our mileage toward larger rucks around canoe training season and canoe races. Then there is always everyone’s buddy Murphy, who likes to insert weather and schedule challenges along the way. As usual, we went into preventive scheduling mode early and had a Plan A, B, and even C to make sure we could get our ten rucks in before the end of the month.

The best thing about this challenge is that we not only linked arms with our Ruck Tribe, Team GoRuck Yourself, but also with ruckers all around the world! In our tribe alone, we had ruckers doing a few miles all the way to 10 to 20 miles on their rucks. It was the perfect challenge because anyone could start fresh with zero experience and participate, while more experienced ruckers could carry more for fewer miles, and others could go from here to the flat edge of the earth. Just kidding on that flat part.

Most would think that if they missed this, then that’s it; however, it’s better than that. There might not be a patch available for you to wear afterward as your trophy, but this challenge was about more than that. It was about setting a goal within simple parameters that could guarantee any one of us success.

Look at your calendar right now. Schedule yourself 10 rucks in 30 days. Set your weight and distance. It could be a mile with your favorite furry animal, walking with the kids, or hitting a park or trail. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other and do what you said you were going to do.

This challenge is more than rucking, though. Its format is a transparency that leads to success in everything you do in life. It’s goal-setting 101, and if you follow the same steps when committing to any goal, you’ll get to where you want to be.
